The Beatles’ sons are coming together to release music.
Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey is teaming up with John Lennon’s son Sean Ono Lennon and Paul McCartney’s son James McCartney for the song Rip Off, which Starkey, 59, shared a clip of on Instagram on Sunday, June 15.
Sean, 49, and James, 47, joined Starkey’s band Mantra of the Cosmos to provide vocals for the genre-bending rock song.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Starkey refuted claims that the group was like The Beatles.
“It’s like Mantra Of The Cosmos with [Sean Ono Lennon and James McCartney] in it. It’s Sean Of The Cosmos and James Of The Cosmos; it’s still my band.” he said.
The interviewer joked that Starkey needs to get George Harrison’s son, Dhani Harrison, in there, and Starkey replied, “No I don’t. Why do I?”
Starkey used to be the drummer for The Who but was fired twice, and claims that after the most recent firing, he was asked to lie and say that he quit instead. Days later, Starkey said he hadn’t been fired from the group but instead “retired.”
James has been interested in music from a young age, teaching himself how to play the guitar and piano.
“It’s hard to live up to The Beatles,” he told The Irish Mirrorin 2013. “When [my parents band] Wings toured, they got slated. Even Dad found it hard living up to the Beatles. I started out playing under an alias.”
Sean has embarked on a solo music career, collaborating with artists like Lana Del Rey. He told Rolling Stonein 1998 about his upbringing as the son of the late John Lennon.
“When you’ve never experienced anything else, it’s not weird — it’s simply your life,” Sean said at the time.
Though Sean Ono Lennon and James McCartney have collaborated before, this is the first time that three of The Beatles’ children have come together to work on music.
